Baby Sleep on the Go: Tips for Better Naps in the Pushchair
Baby Naps on the Go
From peaceful park walks to busy days in town, naps do not always happen at home. With the right pushchair setup and a few simple precautions, you can help keep your little one comfortable while you are out and about.
Babies have a wonderful habit of falling asleep when you least expect it. The gentle movement of a pushchair can be soothing, which means a daytime adventure can quickly turn into nap time.
Whether you are choosing your first travel system or preparing for a day out, understanding how to create a more comfortable environment for naps can help you feel more confident on the move.
Can Babies Nap in a Pushchair?
It is common for babies to fall asleep during a pushchair walk. However, not every pushchair seat or carrycot is designed or approved for sleep, so always check the manufacturer's guidance for your exact model, including its age, weight and usage recommendations.
For every sleep, day or night, The Lullaby Trust advises that the safest place for a baby is their own clear, firm and flat sleep space, such as a cot or Moses basket, in the same room as their parent or carer for at least the first six months.
Choose a Lie-Flat Pushchair
Newborn babies need plenty of support for their head, neck and body. A carrycot or pushchair seat with a lie-flat position helps create a more natural resting posture when you are on the move. Check that the option you choose is suitable from birth and follow the instructions supplied with it.
As your baby grows, a smooth multi-position recline makes it easier to adjust the seat to suit rest, relaxation or a more upright view of the world. Always secure your child using the pushchair's harness when the product instructions require it, even when the seat is reclined.
What to Look For
- A carrycot or lie-flat seat that is suitable for your baby's age
- A secure harness that is easy to adjust correctly
- A protective canopy with good airflow and ventilation
- A smooth recline that can be adjusted without disturbing your baby
- Clear manufacturer guidance on sleep and overnight use
Keep Baby Comfortable
Check your baby regularly while they rest. Make sure their face remains uncovered, their airway is clear and they have not become too warm. Feel their chest or the back of their neck rather than their hands or feet when checking their temperature.
Avoid covering the pushchair with a blanket, as this can restrict airflow and cause heat to build up inside. Use the canopy for shade, keep ventilation panels open where available and adjust your baby's clothing to suit the weather.
Know When to Move Baby
If your baby falls asleep in a car seat while travelling, take them out when you reach your destination and move them to a clear, firm and flat sleep space. Car seats are designed to protect babies during journeys, not to be their main sleeping place.
The same principle applies whenever your pushchair setup is not approved for sleep or cannot provide the position recommended for your baby's age. Once you are home, transfer your baby to their cot or Moses basket and place them on their back. If your carrycot is approved for overnight sleep, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and keep the sleep space clear.
