Original iCandy research: 2026 Family-Friendly Landmarks Index This ranking is a snapshot of the data used for iCandy's original 2026 study rather than a live directory of attraction facilities. Ticket prices, accessibility arrangements, opening times and family services can change, so always check directly with the landmark before travelling.

Travelling with children can turn seeing one of the world's great landmarks into an entirely different experience. The view might be spectacular, but parents are also thinking about pushchair access, toilets, places to stop, temperatures, queues and whether the day is practical with little ones in tow.

To look beyond the postcard, we analysed more than 200 famous landmarks and attractions around the world to see which performed best against the practical factors that matter to travelling families.

The result is our 2026 Family-Friendly Landmarks Index: a top 50 spanning natural wonders, historic sites, gardens, observatories and some of the world's most recognisable cultural attractions.

How the index works

What makes a landmark family-friendly?

We scored every landmark across five categories. Each category contributed an equal 20% to the final score, producing a total rating out of 100.

20% Accessibility
20% Average yearly temperature
20% Family ticket price
20% Online review rating
20% Family amenities
Accessibility considered features such as elevators, escalators and accessible walkways. Family amenities included facilities such as toilets, baby-changing and nursing areas. Family ticket pricing was based on two adults and two children in the original dataset.

Grand Canyon South Rim

92.75 / 100

Grand Canyon South Rim takes first place in our index, combining one of the world's most memorable natural landscapes with infrastructure that can make parts of a family visit considerably easier to plan.

The National Park Service welcomes strollers on the mostly paved Rim Trail and on paved Greenway sections connecting areas of the South Rim. That gives families the option to experience major viewpoints without needing to take on the far more demanding trails below the rim.

Planning with a pushchair: park shuttle buses require strollers to be collapsed before boarding, and oversized or jogging strollers are not accepted. Not every Grand Canyon trail is suitable for wheeled access.

Griffith Observatory

92.10 / 100

Los Angeles' Griffith Observatory takes second place. Its combination of free general admission, educational exhibits and an iconic setting helped it perform strongly across the index.

For children, astronomy becomes much more tangible through displays and interactive experiences exploring the planets, space and the wider universe. For parents, the lack of a general admission charge also removes one of the costs that can quickly build up on a family day out.

03 · China

The Forbidden City

90.47 / 100

Beijing's Forbidden City completes the top three. The enormous palace complex scored particularly strongly in the dataset, bringing together history, extensive visitor areas and the practical facilities assessed in our family-friendly methodology.

Its scale is also something families should plan around. When visiting a major attraction of this size, checking the latest entry arrangements, opening times and accessibility information beforehand can make the day much easier with young children.

The Taj Mahal

90.00 / 100

The Taj Mahal takes fourth place in the index. Its combination of visitor facilities, family ticketing in the original dataset and its exceptionally strong visitor appeal helped place it among our highest scoring landmarks.

Agra can experience very hot conditions, so families travelling with a baby or young child should plan around the forecast, prioritise shade and avoid assuming that an average annual temperature reflects the conditions on the day of their visit.

Hassan II Mosque

89.17 / 100

Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca rounds out our top five. The landmark's vast architecture and guided visitor programme contributed to a strong result in our original research.

Current visitor information from the Hassan II Mosque Foundation lists the minaret at 200 metres high and offers free standard entry for children under six, with paid guided visits operating at scheduled times.

Before visiting: opening hours, visitor rules, guided tour schedules and prices can change, including during religious periods such as Ramadan.

Travelling with little ones

The landmark is only one part of the family journey.

A high index score does not mean every surface, staircase or part of an attraction is pushchair accessible. Before travelling, check the exact route you want to take, current weather, access rules and whether your pushchair will need to be folded at any point.

Check access before arrival Historic and natural landmarks often contain a mixture of accessible and inaccessible areas, even where the main visitor route is suitable for families.
Travel compact where it helps A lightweight pushchair can make busy airports, public transport, queues and destinations where folding is required easier to manage.
Plan for the actual weather Average climate data is useful for comparison, but the forecast on the day matters far more when travelling with a baby or young child.
How should the rankings be used?

The index is designed as a comparative piece of family-travel research and inspiration. It is not a guarantee that every part of a landmark is suitable for a pushchair or for every age of child.

The scores reproduce the original 2026 study. We have not retrospectively changed individual scores as prices or visitor arrangements have changed, because doing so accurately would require the complete original dataset to be rerun across all 200+ landmarks.

Before booking, check current admission prices, accessibility, restrictions, opening times and visitor facilities directly with the attraction.

Are the ticket prices in the original study still current?
Not necessarily. Ticket prices and visitor policies can change after research is published. The index reproduces the scores from iCandy's original 2026 dataset, so families should check current prices directly before travelling.

A lightweight, compact pushchair can be useful when navigating public transport, airports, busy attractions and locations where a stroller may need to be folded. Always check the access requirements of the landmark itself before visiting.
