The news that thieves are targeting designer baby buggies will not surprise anyone who knows how much they cost. New parents regularly spend several hundred pounds on each smart set of wheels.
A study from Halifax Home Insurance has revealed that thefts of baby pushchairs have almost doubled in the past year, fuelling a thriving black market worth an estimated £60million.
Sales of top-of-the-range buggies have risen by 40 per cent as the latest models become more sophisticated and their high resale value has made them a prime target for opportunist thieves.
Unoccupied pushchairs are taken most frequently from inside the home or just outside the property while car parks, cafés and restaurants are other buggy-theft hotspots. Parents are unwittingly fuelling this new crime wave by purchasing second-hand buggies on auction websites.
Consumer expert Which? recently put together advice for parents on keeping their buggies safe including buying a buggy lock (similar to a bike lock), keeping your pushchair in sight at all times when out and securing it somewhere safe when at home.
